Question
I have two problems the first, i have 28.7g of a metal in 96.3C hot water bath. I placed the metal into 150ml of cold water. The max temperature rose to 8.0C the second metal is 17.05g in 98.0C hot water bath. I placed the metal into 150ml of cold water. The max temperature rose to 9.1C. for the first i end up with specific heat = 0.297 for the second i end up with specific heat = 0.5780 problem is metal one is lead, specific heat of 0.128 and metal two is aluminum, specific heat of 0.900 Does my experiment just have a large amount of error or did I calculate these problems incorrectly?Explanation / Answer
How much do you trust your thermometer? And your ability to read it. If you read it higher than it was or reads higher, then you get the kind of results you got. How many places of accuracy can you read that thermometer. Your answer ought to reflect that number of places. It usually is the limiting factor. What about the dissipation of heat on the bottom of the calorimeter. It dissipates without becoming part of the average. Not only that, but you have no way of measuring that heat.
