Question

Hey guys so I did this problem and I understand how to get the magnitude, but im a little confused about Theta. So I have F1= 5.02 i + 3.64 j F2= 0.00 i + 5.00 j F1+F2 = 5.02 i + 8.62 j Magnitude = Sqrt((5.02^2 + 8.64^2)) Magnitude = 9.99 Now to find theta I know its Theta = tan^-1(y/x) I dont understand why to use the values (5.02 as x and 8.64 as y) Is it because once ive added the vectors they create a new triangle, therefor a new theta, I mean theta is given in the initial problem, Just a little confused. Can someone please explain clearly Thanks

Explanation / Answer

as you have to find out the net forces which is F1 and F2 and which you have calculated, the theta used is to be of the net force, not of the force F2
