As the fluid portion of the blood (Plasma) passes through the capillaries, some of the fluid is pushed across the capillary walls. This fluid that collects around the surrounding tissues is called interstitial fluid. Some of this fluid returns to the capillaries and some enter lymph vessel and are known as lymph. Lymph nodes along the way clean this fluid and eventually return it to the venous blood at specific sites.
