Question

Can anyone help with queston 5 steps please?

A sample of an unknown material appears to weigh 260 N in air and 160 N when immersed in alcohol of specific gravity 0.700. What is the volume of the material? Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error. m3 Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error. kg/m3

Explanation / Answer

a)Density of alcohol :D(A) = .7*1000 = 700 Kg/m^3

When submersed, the unknown volume "V" displaces an equal volume of alcohol and the upward bouyant force (260 - 160 = 100) equals the weight of that volume of alcohol;

100 = D(A) * V*g

V= 100/(D(A)*g)

V=100/(9.8*700)

V= .0146

b)The density of the unknown is: its weight in air divided by its Volume * g

D(x) = w/Vg

= 260/(.0146)(9.8)

= 1817 kg/m^3
