Question #1
There once was a peaceful city on the Mississippi called Upper Branch. Downstream a distance of thirty miles was the notorious Lower Branch - a town filled with drinking, gambling and loose morals.
Mike's old boat now traveled the circuit between the two locations at full throttle leaving Upper Branch at 6:00 PM and arriving at Lower Branch by 7:00 PM.
After a night of carousing Mike, quite tipsy by then, left Lower Branch at 10:00 PM and traveled up river (at a slower pace due to the river currents opposite the boats direction) arriving at Upper Branch at 11:30 PM.
Determine the speed of the Mississippe between Upper and Lower Branch.
Remember Distance = (velocity)(time) and the river flows downstream.

3) 15 * 50 / 30 = 255 hrs
1)30 / x+y = 1 ........... x = 30-y
30/ x-y = 1.5 .............. 1.5 x = 30-1.5 y
y = 5 miles / hr
