Explanation / Answer

a)
Consider the value of cos(x) at x = 7
cos(7) = 0.754
From the graph, the value of cos(x) + D at x = 7 is -1.07 [There are total 12 divisions and the curve meets y axis on the 12th division, ie -(1 + 1/13)]
D = cos(x) + D - cos(x)
= - 1.07 - 0.754
= - 1.83
= - 1.8

b)
f(x) max = cos(0) + D = 1 - 1.8 = - 0.8
f(x) min = cos(3.14) + D = -1 - 1.8 = 2.8
[f(x)max + f(x)min] / 2 = [ - 0.8 - 2.8] / 2
= -3.6/2
= - 1.8
