Question

II. Image location by parallax Obtain a small mirror and two identical bolts. Place the mirror in the middle ofa heet ofpaper. Stand one bolton its head about 10cm from the front of the mirror. We will call this bolt the object bolt Mirror On the paper, mark the locations of the mirror and object bolt. A. Place your head so that you can see the image of the bolt in the mirror Object nail Use the method of parallax to position the second bolt so that it is located in the same place as the image of the object bolt. Mark this location on the paper. Is the image of the bolt located on the surface of, in front of, or behind the mirror? Explain. Would observers at other locations agree that the image is located at the place you marked? Check your answer experimentally. B. Move the bolt off to the right side of the mirror as shown. Find the new image location. Mark this location on the paper. ooMirror Object nail In the following experiments, we will determine the location of an object and its image by a different technique called ray tracing

Explanation / Answer

II (A) The image of the bolt will be formed behind the mirror. This is because the image formed by the plane mirror is virtual and behind the mirror.

Yes other observers will also agree.

III (A) We can use these lines of sight to locate the bolt s following: Extend all the lines of sight further to a point where they all meet. their point of intersection will give the position of the bolt.

The smallest number of lines of sight needed to determine the location of bolt will be two.

(B) extend the lines of sights upto the where they meet. This point will be the location of the image of bolt.

Yes both the methods will yield the same result.

(C) After removing everything from the paper we can see only rays and locations of objects and their images. The object distance is positive and it is assumed that object is placed to the left of the mirror. Let the real images and objects have positive distances while virtual images have negative distances. As the image is formed by the mirror is virtual, the light rays forming the image do not actually pass through the image. they meet when extended geometrically. as we can clearly see that none of the lines of sight from the bolt passes through the mirror even though the image of the bolt is behind the mirror.
