Question #3 The densification of soils via compaction is one of the oldest and most widely used geotechnical engineering methods employed today. There are numerous methods for in-situ soil compaction and not all of them can be covered in class. Therefore, your assignment is the following: 1) Summarize three methods for field compaction used today. For each method selected include: a description of the technique, machinery required, applications, advantages and disadvantages. tons n the Type your answer for each method in paragraph form. Also include a summary of the three topics in the memo. No handwritten responsesExplanation / Answer
Compaction : it is the process to increase the soil or field density in order to make it suitable for building, roads etc.
The volume of void space are reduced by different method of compaction. The choice of method will depend upon the soil type, thr maximum dry density required and economic consideration. Methods of field compaction used today are:
1. Tempers (impact load applied)
2. Rollers ( constant pressure applied)
3. Vibrators (vibratory force compaction)
Compaction depend on following factors.
- contact pressure
- No. Of passes
- thickness of layer
-speed of roller
Selection of equipment as per soil
weathered roak, well graded coarse soil
Application of compaction of soil
- increase load bearing capacity
-provide stability
-reduce settling of soil
-prevent soil settlement and frost change
-reduce water seepage, swelling and contraction
Equipment suitable soil Smooth steel drum roller well graded sandsgravel, crushed rock, asphalt Pneumatic tyred rollers most coarse and fine soils Sheep foot rollers fine grained soils, sands and gravel with > 20% fines Grid rollerweathered roak, well graded coarse soil
Vibrating plates Coarse soils with 4-8% fines Tampers and rammers All soil types
