Assignment: SCI203 Phase 4 Lab Report

Title: Analysis of Energy Sources

Instructions: You will write a 1-page lab report using the scientific method.

When your lab report is complete – submit it in the classroom.

Part I: Using the lab animation, fill in the data table below to gather your data, and use it to help you generate your hypothesis, outcomes, and analysis.

Part II: Write a 1-page lab report using the following scientific method sections:

Purpose

State the purpose of the lab.

Introduction

This is an investigation of what is currently known about the question being asked. Use background information from credible references to write a short summary about concepts in the lab. List and cite references in APA style.

Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome

A hypothesis is an educated guess. Based on what you have learned and written about in the Introduction, state what you expect to be the results of the lab procedures.

Methods

Summarize the procedures that you used in the lab. The Methods section should also state clearly how data (numbers) were collected during the lab; this will be reported in the Results/Outcome section.

Results/Outcome

Provide here any results or data that were generated while doing the lab procedure.

Discussion/Analysis

In this section, state clearly whether you obtained the expected results. Also discuss the results and what you learned from this lab.

Note: You can use the lab data to help you discuss the results and what you learned.

Provide references in APA format. This includes a reference list and in-text citations for references used in the Introduction section.

Give your paper a title, and identify each section as specified above. Although the hypothesis will be a 1-sentence answer, the other sections will need to be paragraphs to adequately explain your experiment.

For each assignment, you will use the M.U.S.E. link to complete the lab.

In this lab, you will see the time progression of impacts associated with either coal-fired or nuclear power plants for electricity generation to help you write up a scientific paper that centers on the following:

Given that the current 2 primary sources of electricity generation are coal and nuclear power plants, which of these sources is better for human sustainability?

Analyze Energy Sources Lab

Everything people do in their daily lives involves the consumption of resources—particularly energy. With respect to energy, electricity is one of the most important resources consumed and also one of the highest in demand. Traditionally, fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil have dominated the U.S. energy mix; however, as it is well-known, carbon-emitting energy sources are very detrimental to the environment and are contributing to global warming. Fortunately, alternative energy resources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power are becoming more efficient and prevalent in today’s energy economy.

Using the M.U.S.E. link, review the background information and gather your data.

Use the Lab 4 worksheet for assignment instructions and data collection

Explanation / Answer

Title: Analysis of Energy Sources

Part II: Write a 1-page lab report using the following scientific method sections:

The Table explains fuels used for generation of power and their effect on environment and human life.

Four types coal fuel tested in the lab to generate power. Q1 quality coal is best quality used less quantity to generate more power than the Q2 to Q4 quality coals. Q4 quality coal is lowest grade and its analysis shows it generates more emissions and human accidents than other coals.

Similarly 4 types of nuclear fuels tested for generating power. The lab results shows quantity of fuels required their pollution emissions and impact on human life. Lab results shows that Q1 quality nuclear fuel is best one as its quantity required is less and its emissions and human accidents are less. Q4 quality nuclear fuel is least quality one and lab results shows it may yield in catastrophic effect if any accident occurs.

Similarly the coal fuels are showing more pollution than the nuclear fuels. But in case of accidents nuclear fuels produce catastrophic effect than the coal fuels.

Purpose

State the purpose of the lab.

The purpose of analysis of the lab is to analyse qualities of power generating fuels used and their emission effects and accidents impacts. Based on this the Power Plant designed to produce electric power and helps in taking measures to reduce emissions and accidents.

Introduction

This is an investigation of what is currently known about the question being asked. Use background information from credible references to write a short summary about concepts in the lab. List and cite references in APA style.

To generate electric power coal and nuclear fuels are used. Before planning for power plant the available fuels are tested in the lab and based on which the power plant designed. So this lab test results given in the table are Pilot Plant study giving results how much quantity of fuel is required, their emissions and accidents.

Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome

A hypothesis is an educated guess. Based on what you have learned and written about in the Introduction, state what you expect to be the results of the lab procedures.

Based on Lab test results mentioned in the table, Coal fuel of Q1 quality and Nuclear fuel of Q1 quality are recommended to use in power plant. It also through light on nuclear fuel emits less pollution than coal fuels.

Methods

Summarize the procedures that you used in the lab. The Methods section should also state clearly how data (numbers) were collected during the lab; this will be reported in the Results/Outcome section.

The Lab results shows Pilot Plant studies carried out to bring out best quality of coal and best quality of nuclear to be selected to use in main power plant. Pilot Plant is small lab level power plant designed used in testing and bring out results,

Results/Outcome

Provide here any results or data that were generated while doing the lab procedure.

The Results of Lab test shows that Q1 quality coal and Q1 quality nuclear fuels should be used in their respective power generating units.

Lab testing results guiding to take decision which type fuels to be recommended to use in their power plants
