Stream Terminology -headwaters -mouth -tributaries -drainage basin (watershed) -channel -bed -banks -floodplain -levees -gradient -base level -Stream Flow -Velocity -Discharge (know the formula for calculating discharge) (know what factors control discharge) -what river has the highest discharge in the world? Why? -Sediment Load -bed load -suspended load -dissolved load -Channel Patterns (types of streams) For both of the following channel patterns you should know: what they look like where they occur (closer to the headwaters or closer to the mouth) how their gradients compare to each other how they form (downward or side -to -side erosion) -Straight Stream -V-shaped valley -Meandering Stream -cut bank -point bar -oxbow lakes FLOODING -stage -flood stage -recurrence interval What is a "100-year flood?"Explanation / Answer
It has very big list but only two questions
1: River with largest discharge- The river with largest discharge is river Amazon. This is due to the fact that it has highest drainage area in the world.
2: 100 year flood -The term hundred year flood is used for an area having minimal possibility of occurrence of flood.
The definition of important terms are:
Headwaters: The headwaters of a river denotes the source tributary or stream from which the river originates.
Mouth:Mouth is the farthest point from the river source where the river drains into sea.
Tributary: Tributary is the smaller streams which flows into a river and thus contribute in water availability.
Drainage Basin: The watered area of a river system is called drainage basin..
Channel
Bed- The channel bed is the valley bed above which the rivers flow.
Bank- Channel bank is the land area bordering the streams on either side.
Floodplains: The flat area of land occurring along streams which experience occasional flooding due to hevay discharge is called floodplains.
Levees: Levee is the ridge of sediment formed due to Deposition of sediment due to flooding.
Gradient: The drop in the stream elevation per unit area along its course is called gradient.
Base Level: The lowest level below which river erosion can not takes place is called base level.
Stream Flow:
Velocity: The speed of flow of water measured in length per unit time is called stream velocity.
Discharge
formula: Q= A u
A cross sectional area
u average flow velocity ( this shows that area and velocity effect discharge)
Ssediment load: The sediments which are transported along bed is called bed load. Those sediments which moves along the water in floating condition is called suspended load. Those sediments which are soluble moved in dissolved state I.e. as solution are called dissolved load.
