Hearing Health:
Hearing Health policy is very important in geriatric health. The age-related hearing loss is more common especially about 80 years of age. Additionally, the physical and environmental predisposing factor also interfere with the hearing loss. According to WHO, greater than 40db HL is considered as hearing loss. By 2030, it will be in the top 15 leading cause of burden of disease. Hearing loss negatively impact on the mental health of the person. It also negatively affects the personal, social, and economic factors of the individual and the economic and environmental factors of the Nations.
Social implications:
The social and cultural factors threaten the hearing loss of an individual. Social interaction may reduce the risk of depression, cognitive disability, emotional and behavioral changes. Reducing the risks of lifestyle will helps to maintain good hearing. ICF framework influences the person to communicate in the society.
Economic impact:
High economic status and highly educated population have a low risk of hearing loss. Lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption and smoking have increased the risk of hearing loss. Few dietary factors are also associated with the hearing loss. Women who consuming fish rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are at lower risk.
Prevalence:
The prevalence rate is rise with age and 45.6% are with the bilateral hearing loss. According to this NAHNES, this report does not include the people in the old age homes, minority population and subgroup population who was unable to go to the mobile examination. In the U.S 29 million population have hearing loss and the 30 million aged older than 12 years have the bilateral hearing loss. Each ear 48 million are affected with hearing loss of one ear.
Impact on overall public health:
It depends on the individual, severity, lifestyle, communication, and specific environment. Audiometry is used to assess the hearing difficulties. Environmental conditions such as noisy areas increase the demands of the hearing impairments. people face the number of challenges to cope up with life with the hearing loss. As it is difficult to detect earlier, the measures have to be improved. it also affects the individual physical and occupational functioning, communication abilities, quality of life.
Quality of Life:
People with hearing loss have the poor quality of life when compared to normal hearing. It affects the communication abilities and limitations of daily living of an individual. Hearing ability is associated with the decline in quality of life.
