In order to maintain homeostasis within the body, the circulatory system needs to cooperate with all of the other body systems. If something goes wrong within the circulatory or respiratory systems, other systems can be affected as well. One of the conditions that caught my eye on this website was bronchopulmonary dysplasia. This disorder affects premature infants because their alveoli are not fully developed. Alveoli are very important little sacs that allow the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide when we inhale and exhale. In order for the premature infant to survive, they need to ben oxygenated respiratory support or a mechanical ventilator. Unfortunately, these treatments may cause the condition called broncho (airway) pulmonary (lung) dysplasia (abnormal cells developed within the tissue that may indicate cancer). This disease can be so severe that both of the lungs and the rest of the body are affected. The blood vessels surrounding the damaged alveoli can also be damaged, which can make it difficult for blood to flow throughout the lungs. If this goes on for too long, pulmonary hypertension can occur. Pulmonary (lung) hypertension (high pressure) is when there is an increase in pressure in the blood vessels within the lungs and the heart. This can cause very severe strain on the heart and may eventually lead to heart failure. After reading through many of the diseases on this website, I noticed that if these conditions go untreated for too long, the rest of the body will begin to deteriorate. Some diseases and disorders more serious than others. All body systems are important, but a person absolutely cannot live without a heart beat or the ability to breathe. So, if the heart fails or the ability to breathe is gone, it is only a matter of time before the rest of the body shuts down.
