CASE STUDY:
SPORTS NUTRITIONIST: Clara, Mounthallway High School, London
CASE DETAILS:
- Wrestler 152 pounder to acheive 145 pound weight class
- HIgh school league - wrestling weight determination based on a minimum 7 percent fat.
Given data :
Body composition assessment data using the following four different methods:
TASK : Plan preseason strengthening and conditioning with a wrestlers weight loss diet.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
PRESEASON CONDITIONING:
A successful preseason workout is a deadly combination of strength, conditioning and traning exercises to gain, develop power, endurance and speed. Its more than lifting heavy weights. As a wrestler, the preseason conditioning plan should focus on improving balance, agility, strength and flexibilty. The following plan is tailored specifically to loose weight efficiently within a month:
This above mentioned plan is feasible and its only a sample, it will differ every 2-3 days. Since the season starts in a month, the wrestler is bound to have certain physiological and psychological effects which I have dicussed in detail below.
POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF PRESEASON CONDITIONING AND RESTRICTED CALORIE INTAKE:
PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS:
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS:
STANDARD ERRORS OF MEASUREMENT OF THE VARIOUS BODY COMPOSITION ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGIES:
Skinfold measurements/ Anthropometry:
It is the most popular and common method of Body fat estimation. A skinfold caliper is used for these maesurements. If performed according to the recommended gudelines, errors are less. But standard errors could arise because of the following reasons:
-anthropometrician is not adequately trained
-This test focuses only on subcutaneous cut thus it is difficult to assess obese/ lean atheletes
BIOELECTRICAL IMPEDENCE:
BIA accuracy if done properly on a good operating equipment- the accuracy varies in 3%. But the standard error range is higher than the other methods. The accuracy of this test depnds on multiple uncontrollable variables. This test tends to miscalculate obese and lean people.
AIR DISPLACEMENT PLETHYSMOGRAPHY: A significant physical property bosy index is measured using this method. But the validity and reliability of this test is till in question even after years of evolution of this test.
HYDROSTATIC WEIGHING: It is based on body density calculations. Even though its a gold standard measure, sometimes it is impracticable. Errors arise from calculating residual lung volume and the bone density also varies because of age, ethinicity and race.
