Question

Microsoft has been accused of being a monopoly, as has Google. In what ways might either of these firms act like a monopoly? In what ways do they face competition? Write one paragraph that follows one company and clearly argues one point (ie. “Microsoft is a monopolist” or “Google is not a monopolist”). While I expect that most students will use Microsoft or Google as an example, if you are familiar with another company that has been accused and would like to argue for or against that firm, please feel free to expand the discussion. As with last week’s discussion, please feel free to roam the internet for opinions, just put them into your own words. However, for this post, I do want you to cite the article, just link to the website at the end of your response.

Explanation / Answer

FACEBOOK with all its features and services is a monopoly. It is the only platform that allows 2 billion users to contact each other, maintain relationships, share their experiences as well as day to day chores and get feedback or comments from friends. It also helps online businesses to flourish. It is a social media network and has market share fo approx 77%. Facebook also constantly upgrades itself through regular innovation to maintain its dominant position.

There are other social media platforms like Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, but none of these is as big as Facebook.
