Carbs Yes or No As with many fads the low carbohydrate diet high protein intake came with a lot of fanfare and extreme promises of weight loss. Diets such as the Atkins and South Beach promote low carbohydrate and high protein have been scrutinized as of late because of the extended research in areas of diabetes and obesity Carbohydrates are a polymer of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen found in breads, pastas, and fruits. They come in many forms such as monosaccharides like glucose, fructose and galactose. Disaccharides such as sucrose, lactose and maltose. Polysaccharides such as starch, glycogen and cellulose and are normally the targets of the carb reduction campaign. A carbohydrate's structure allows for the storage of energy. When broken the energy release assist in metabolism and catabolism of other compounds. Areas that carbohydrates play a role in is reproduction, immune response, production of ATP and blood clotting. Main usage would be in brain functioning whereas because of the brain barrier only the small molecule glucose, can enter and be used in the brain. Over consumption of carbs and processed foods will be detrimental depending on if simple or complex. A drastic decrease in carbohydrates and increase in proteins can lead to ketosis and the body to burning its own fat for energy and increasing cholesterol levels. The Atkins Diet has been shown to reduce cholesterol. According to the US Dietary Guidelines 2015-2020 45-60%of our energy should be obtained from complex carbs while 10% should be derived from simple carbsExplanation / Answer
ATKINS DIET meaning a low carbohydrate diet which is used in weight loss programme. HOW FAR replacing carbohydrate with protein for energy needs is RIGHT is the question that arises......
All ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS provide energy there is no doubt in it .... BUT this doesnt mean that we can substitute one ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT with the OTHER ...... every nutrient has its own role to play in human body.
THE ENERGY liberated from carbohydrates act as a VITAL and ONLY SOURCE of enery to BRAIN & MUSCLES...
When this is being replaced by other nutrients then energy generated by it cannot be used by the BRAIN &MUSCLES...... this leads to craving for glucose in BRAIN & MUSCLE leading to many complications. Because the brain is too sensitive to hypoglycemia leading to 1) injury to pyramidal neurons leading to muscle weakness especially the extensor group of muscles of upper limb & flexors of lower limb... decreased controlof active movements....
2) in severe cases it leads to PSEUDOLAMINAR NECROSIS OF CORTEX which means uncontrolled death of brain cells .... CA1areain hippocampus also is sensitive to hypoglycemia and unndergoes necrosis which is the onlyarea responsible for CONTEXTUAL MEMORY RETRIVAL ....
3)IF hypoglycemia continues tooLONG itleads to WIDESPREAD INJURY TO MANY AREAS OF BRAIN.......
ACCORDING to WHO ONE'S MEALS MUST BE A BALANCED DIET which constitues proteins 10-15% of dietry energy
fat about 15-30% of dietry energy rest being CARBOHYDRATES.
IF its a matter of weight loss than there aremany more methods to lose weight like drinking luke warm lemon plus honey water early morning
workouts
carbohydrates with dietry fiber though these amay be slow process but not at the expense of BRAIN DAMAGE..
ON THE OTHER HAND TOO MUCH PROTEIN CAUSES HIGHCHOLESTEROL IN BLOOD, KIDENY STONES due to high calcium content in urine...
so at end i want to conclude that weight loss can be achieved by other means tooo this can never become a resason to change the diet from high carbohydrate to low carbohydrate diet.....
SAY NO TO LOW CARBOHYDARATE & HIGH PROTEIN DIET AND SAVE YOUR BRAIN FROM NECROSIS
