Question
Characteristics of a person or people, geographical location, and era help to better understand the development and pervasiveness of a disease. Descriptions of persons, places, and time help to effectively describe disease and health status within a population.
Using the Internet, research about a disease of global concern (HIV, AIDS, or any such disorder). Based on your research, answer the following questions:
How would you use demographic data to characterize this disease?
How would you incorporate further research to address this disease?
How would you use morbidity and mortality in developing prevention strategies aimed at increasing attention to disease and decreasing adverse health outcomes?
Which phenomenon—morbidity or mortality—is better to study to develop preventive strategies? Why?
Explanation / Answer
HIV/AIDS
1.First analyse how much population is infected in different geographical area. There are many factors that lead to infection of HIV/AIDS . Collect the datas concerning rate of infection, which helps in characterizing the disease. Through collected demographic data we can categorize the rate of infection of disease. Main cause of HIV is sexual intercourse . Collect data regarding children , unmarried , immunocompromised individual s, pregnant women which will be more helpful in assessing the disease.
2. After collecting data on different geographical area on HIV/ AIDS there will be a clear outline on what further can be done . Formulate a computer , audio or video assisted questionnaire , self administered questionnaire , or a brief interview by any ancillary personnel. Note the role of travel or movement of the people like nomads in the area. Educate about basic biology of HIV and body's response to HIV infection .
3. Health promotion and disease prevention are two important key strategies. Preventive and treatment measures for HIV/ AIDS patients helps in decreasing the level of mortality and morbidity. Acquiring data of mortality and morbidity in certain area will be easier to develop preventive measures and give idea on how to execute it. Mortality and morbidity increase in low socio economic groups , unemployment , illiterate individuals. So HIV preventable programmes should always concentrate more on young adults, children and pregnant women who are often affected .
4. Different areas have different rates of infection.Mortality rates have been the oldest and the most widely used indicators of health status. the use of
mortality or death rates is inadequate because it measures only the
end of disease. An added problem is the difficulty in finding the exact cause of death. The problem increases as HIV/AIDS is chronic in character.
