Her 5-year-old son, Jacob, came home from kindergarten with a letter from the school nurse stating that a classmate was ill with HINI influenza and that all the students in the class had been exposed to the disease. Tanya is concerned about the risks to Jacob and the rest of the family. She is 8 months pregnant, and the family has no health insurance. She says, "You are a nursing student; do you know what I should do or where I might go for assistance?" Although you are flattered that Tanya has consulted you. you need to consider whether you have the expertise to answer her questions. This situation requires knowledge of many aspects of nursing (e.g, immunizations, pregnancy microbiology, pathophysiology).Though you may not have all of the information you need to answer her questions you should be able to help your neighbor resolve her con- cerns. You will need to consider the following questions: What is going on in the situation that may influence the outcome? Who should be involved to improve the outcome? What theoretical knowledge do I need to answer Tanya's questions?Where would I find this information? a What additional data do I need to collect from Tanya? " What suggestions and/or referrals should I offer to Tanya?
