Question

Please be straight, short and specific D Question 4 3 pts Green sunfish and bluegill are common fish in our streams, and they each eat a similar variety of invertebrates (worms, insects). Your survey finds that bluegill are much more common than green sunfish in upstream sites, and green sunfish are much more common than bluegill in downstream sites. You know that all your sites have similar invertebrates, so the difference isn't caused by differences in the food that's available at each site. Explain how some other factor could cause the outcome of competition to be so different between upstream and downstream sites HTML Editor -Paragraph

Explanation / Answer

Given condition is out come of niche differentiation by spatial partitioning.

When 2 competing species use same resource by occupying different areas within the range of occurence of resource. It is called as spatial partitioning.

In this case same invertebrates (resource) present in river and is used by both green sunfish and bluegill. so to avoid competition these 2 species prefer spatial partitioning type of niche differentiation. Due to niche differentiation there will very less competition or may be absent. It results into survival of both species succesfully.
