Midterm Review Questions.18 sp.pdf 24. To exercise for 2 hours continuously, what must one do? 25· What does the voawx mean and what application does it have to us? 26. Describe the relative-to-body weight VOs and the absolute vo2. Identify the units of measure for both. 27. Compare and contrast the energetics of two individuals of the same body weight walking side-by-side. 28. Define peak VO2. 29. What are the relative maximal values of the different types of exercise te.g., running, bicycling, and upper body ergometry) as given in class? 30. What is thetrelationship between maximal duration of exercise and the lactate (anaerobic) threshold (LT)? Below and above LT? 31. What is the relationship among type of exercise, intensity of exercise as it relates to optimizing calorie burning during exercise? 2. which type of lathlete would have the highest Vo: ?Explanation / Answer
24] Exercising continuously for two hours will need a lot of energy. So, one can not do vigourous exercise continuously for two hours. Comparatively easier exercises like cycling at slow speed, walking at an easy pace etc can be done for a longer period . It improves aerobic capacity and muscle endurance. It also helps to raise cardiovascular endurance , speed , agility , coordination and balance. Since it involves working for a sustained period of time without rest, before getting started, one should have enough fluid intake to keep the body well hydrated and energy boosters may be required. One important thing to keep into consideration is that one should build up slowly to exercise continuously for such a long time i.e. in the beginning the duration should be less and slowly one should increase the time of exercising so that the body slowly gets accustomed to the workout.
A sudden involvement in such a long period of exercising might harm the body.
25] VO2 max or maximal oxygen consumption is the rate of O2 consumption measured during exercise of increasing density. It is measured as milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of the body weight [ ml/kg/min] . It is an important factor which helps to determine an athelete's capacity to perform sustained exercise.
26] The relative - to -body - weight VO2 is the ml of O2 used per kg of the body weight per minute . Its unit is ml/kg/min.
Absolute VO2 is the maximum capacity of the lungs to hold oxygen during one inhalation.
27] To compare the energetics of two people of equal weight walking at the same pace, we will have to measure their breathing rate and pulse rate.
The person who breathes faster and has a faster pulse rate , will be less energetic than the other. Increased breathing and pulse rate indicate that his body requires more oxygen to fulfill the energy requirements of the body while walking.
28] Peak VO2 is a plateau in the human body where oxygen consumption is observed during maximum physical effort . It is a factor for determining the capacity of a person to sustain maximum performance. Peak VO2 is reached when consumption of O2 remains the same despite an increase in workload.
