A new metabolic pathway (35 points). A new metabolic pathway has been partially characterized. Known features of the pathway are shown below. Some details, including the chemical structures of intermediates, remain unknown: reaction 1 reaction 2 reaction 3 reaction 4 reaction 5 H2O ATP ADP NADPH NADP Glyceraldehyde H2O CO 2 3-phosphate ?G-4.2 kJ/mol ?G--35 kJ/mol ?G--1 . 1 kJ/mol ?G-0.4 kJ/mol AG 0.5 kJ/mol a. Is this pathway likely to be anabolic or catabolic? Provide two pieces of evidence b. Which step of this pathway do you predict will be most highly regulated? Why (1- c. What would the equilibrium constant be for the net reaction of the entire that support your answer. 3 sentences)? combined pathway from A to F, at 37°C? Show your work for the calculation.

Explanation / Answer

Ans

A This pathway is anabolic pathway as it is a biosynthetic pathway and combines with small molecules to form large and complex molecules. Anabolic pathway requires energy input to produce macromolecules. In a cell, Anabolism reaction is unfavorable due to +?G gibbs free energy and input of the reaction follows the exergonic reaction, and the coupled reaction of catabolic pathway affects the thermodynamic reactions by decreasing the overall activation energy and allows the reaction to takes place.

B. Step B to C Pathway is predicative to be highly regulated because the energy carrier molecule ATP is an allosteric inhibitor of many enzymes and when the ATP feedback inhibition works it leads to break down into its components ADP and Pi. ADP works as an allosteric regulator and acts by binding to enzymes and becomes more active in the reaction process.

D. Reaction 4 is likely to use a “bypass reaction” as two compounds are isomerized by retrieving ATP and NADH via glyceraldehyde3-phophate dehydrogenase.
