Question

Structure and function relationships: The function of molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, communities and ecosystems depends on structure. Structure and function are linked tightly, and understanding one requires understanding the other.

1. Final Question: Briefly describe eight examples of function relying on structure. Select two examples from your list (one example must be at or below the cellular level and the other must be above the cellular level). Explain, in detail, the structure of your examples and explain, in detail, how the function is dependent on the structure.

Explanation / Answer

Structure and function relationship....

1. cardiac cells- In cardiac cells, intercalated discs are present which helps in transmitting of impulse from cell to another.

2. WBC- They are flexible. they can change their shape.

3. neuron- It has a large axon which helps it in transmission of nerve impulse.

4. Heart- heart of mammals ane birds has four chambers. Both the sides are separated by septum to prevent mixing of blood.

5. Mitochondria- It has deep folds of inner membrane which bears F1-F0 particles. This infolding increases the surface area.

6. nephron- It has a network of capillaries known as glomerulus which filters the blood.

7. chloroplast- There is compartmentalization which separates dark reaction and light reaction.

8. lungs- They have thin walls and rich blood supply which helps in exchange of gases.

9. Sperm- It has a tail which helps it in moving.
