In 2018 a small biotech company has developed a saliva test for Alzheimer's disease, published a short paper in the journal of Alzheimer's disease, in which they claimed that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen (Advil) can prevent Alzheimer's disease from progressing if the disease is detected early enough. What was the raisonning? How ever other others have suggested that that this claim is misleading, why? Can you show me your sources please. A team led by Canadian neuroscientist Patrick McGeer diagnose Alzheimer's disease by measuring the concentration of an amino acid called amyloid beta protein 42 (Abeta 42) which is found in everywhere in the body but made it only in our brain. They claimed that daily taking of ibuprofen may prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. According to them, the production of peptide amyloid beta protein 42 (Abeta42) in most people is almost same regarding sex or age and the production rate is two to three times higher in individuals that results to develop Alzheimer’s disease. A beta 42 is deposit only in the brain and they signified that all organ made the peptide that is secreted in saliva from the submandibular gland. So, the saliva test is possible to predict whether an individual is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Doug Brown, Chief Policy and Research Officer at Alzheimer’s Society inform that long-term use of Ibuprofen has the risk of stomach ulcers and intestinal bleeding and have harmful interactions with other medications like Warfarin. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Although, it can be slow down the disease’s progression by some medications. Doctors also recommend that the improving cardiovascular health, eating a healthy diet, regular exercise can delay this disease.
