Assume that any NADH 2.5 ATP &FADH2IQH2; 1.5 ATP 5. a) Calculate the approximate net yield of ATP during the aerobic conversion of 2 glycerol to 1 glucose. b) Calculate the approximate net yield of ATP during the aerobic conversion of 2 glycerol to 2 pyruvate. 6 What is the yield of ATP when each of the following substrates is completely oxidized to CO2 by a mammalian cell homogenate? Assume that glycolysis, the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation are fully active. a) pyruvate b) lactate c) fructose-1,6-bisphosphate d) phosphoenolpyruvate e) galactose f) dihydroxyacetone phosphateExplanation / Answer
Answer. 5 a) Glycerol converts to DHA which yield 1 NADH. Then DHA converts to DHAP which consume 1 ATP. Then DHAP to glucose no ATP produces or losses. Then in total 2* 2.5 ATP (2NADH Per glycerol) and 2 ATP lost for DHAP. Then 3 ATP are produces from 2 glycerol to 1 glucose.
B) 2 glycerol to 2 glycerol 6 phosphate consume 2 ATP. Glycerol 6 phosphate to DHAP , 5 ATP produces (1 NADH per substrate). Then 2 Glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate to pyruvate 9 ATP (2ATP + 1 NADH per substrate) so in total 5+9-2= 12 ATP are produced.
Answer 6. A. Pyruvate to CO2 yields around 4 NADH (4*2.5=10 ATP) , 1 FADH (1*1.5=1.5 ATP) and 1 ATP So total 12.5 ATP formed from pyruvate.
B) lactate only 2 ATP are produced
C. In case of fructose 1,6 phosphate extra 2 NADH 2*2.5=5 ATP) and 2 ATP produces plus pyruvate then 25+5+2= 32 ATP produces from fructose 1,6 phosphate
D ) in case of phosphoenolpyruvate it produces 2 ATP more than pyruvate, so total ATP are 14.5 ATP produced.
E) in case of galactose 2 ATP are consumed to form fructose 1,6 phosphate so total ATP produces are 32-2 ATP = 30 ATP produced.
F) in case of DHAP half amount of ATP are produces as in case of fructose1,6 phosphate that is 16 ATP.
