Consider the following solution for the transportation problem. See attached picture, solve with steps

(a) (points: 1) What is the objective value of this solution?

(b) (points: 2) Is the solution optimal? Why or why not?

(c) (points: 7) If not, find the optimal solution using the transportation simplex method.

Explanation / Answer

a) The objective value of the solution is = Total cost of transportation = 20 x 4 + 20 x 6 + 50 x 6 + 10 x 7 + 10 x 7 + 40 x 8 = 960

b) Yes this is an optimal solution as the lowest cost of transportation is possible only with the given values and the values satisfy all the constraints being given. Any change in the values will increase the total cost of transportation.
