Question

Assume that you are the director of human resources for Bed, Bath, and Beyond. You have just received an e-mail from the vice president for administration and finance, and he recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal regarding the cost of EEOC lawsuits and how diversity initiatives can reduce the number of EEOC complaints. He has asked you for a report, elaborating on the difference between EEOC, affirmative action programs, and equal employment opportunity. How would you respond to the vice president? In your answer, be sure to compare and contrast the following three approaches to diversity management: equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity initiatives

Explanation / Answer

Equal employment Opportunity means freedom from discrimination based on color, religion, sex, origin or age. These are rights that are guaranteed by federal and state fair employment laws.

Affirmative action plans are standards that defines the organizations for proactively recruiting, hiring and promoting women, minorities, disabled persons and veterans.

Diversity initiatives are goals to measure the acceptances of minorities by embracing the differences on the cultures of the workers at the same company.

By promoting EEOC, AAPS and diversity initiatives we as a company can create a great place to work, fair opportunities, respect among the members and a low turnover rate.
