1. What is the income tax liability of Sochai if his files jointly with his wife?
2. Does Somchai owe any taxes? or does the government owe him a refund? How much refund?

Explanation / Answer

Monthly Income = 50000 baht

Annual Total Income = 50000 x 12 = 600000 Baht

LESS: Retirement Account Contribution = 12 x 300 = 3600 baht

LESS: Life Insurance Premium = 500 x 5 x 12 = 30000 baht

LESS: Mortgage Interest Payment = 60000 baht

Net Taxable Income = 506400 baht

(1) Income Tax Liability = 27500 + 15 % of amount exceeding 500000 baht = 27500 + 0.15 x 6400 = 27500 + 960 = 28460 baht

(2) Monthly Income withheld as advance tax = 3000 baht

Annual Advance Tax Paid = 3000 x 12 = 36000 baht

As the advance ta witheld is greater than the total tax liability, the government owes Somchai money and will refund the difference.

Tax Refunded = 36000 - 28460 = 7540 baht
