Question

Please help with this. I decided to take a summer course and it turns out I have the world's worst teacher with the world's worst logic. These are practice questions to help us study for our upcoming midterm, however, he REFUSES to put an answer key up with the logic of "you learn better if you get things wrong because you remember your mistakes better". But how the heck are you supposed to study for the exam then? Sorry for the rant, but please help with these. Thank you so much.

Please be detailed so I can actually learn something. Trust me, you are a better teacher than my teacher.

1. Work on your own to answer the following questions. 1A. Circle carbons? Label those, too. and label the functional groups in the following molecule. Are there any chiral C-C-N ?? CH H 2 CH H3C CH3 1B. Will this molecule function as an acid or a base? Why? 1C. This molecule is amphipathic, meaning it has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts. Draw a line to split the molecule into the hydrophobic and hydrophilic halves and label each half. Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

1A) The functional groups present in the given molecule are,

Chiral carbon is an asymmetric carbon. It is attached to four different types of atoms. There are no chiral atoms in the given molecule.

1B) The molecule will function as an acid because of the presence of carboxyl group (- COOH).

1C) The upper half of the molecule which contains the functional groups (carboxyl and amine) are polar and therefore hydrophilic. The lower half of the molecule is devoid of any functional groups and therefore non polar and hydrophobic.
