Question
Please answer these question based on Geothermal Power.
What is the form of renewable energy? Geothermal Power.
Can it be used for the power grid in general, for businesses, for homes? Be sure to note whether it is an option for one, two or all three types of consumers?
Would this option be affordable for a home owner?
Which region of the country suits this form of renewable energy the best?
Could this form of energy be used in Central PA.? Why or why not?
Problems with this form of renewable energy?
Explanation / Answer
The geothermal power is the energy generated by the use of the heat energy of the earth. There are two forms of geothermal energy i.e. Geothermal electrical and Geothermal heating.
Geothermal energy can be used for Power grid, for businesses as well as for homes. The geothermal power can be used in the form of Geothermal electricity for use in power grid whereas Geothermal heat energy can be used for direct heating purposes of businesses and households.
This is a very costly procedure and is not suitable for household owner as this not affordable for a home owner.
The part of country suitable for the generation of this form of energy is the zones of active seismicity and volcanism and hence Western states, Alaska and Hawaii are the suitable areas for such energy generation.
This form of energy generation is not suitable for Central PA as this is not as active as the western parts.
Issues:
The geothermal sources can cause air and water pollution if the same is released to surface. In this regard it is pertinent to remember that the geothermal systems may contain toxic compounds like hydrogen sulfide.
The hot water of geothermal system may damage the aquatic ecosystem if released on surface.
The generation of geothermal energy requires injecting the fluid, which may act as lubricant and thereby results in increasing the seismicity.
Geothermal energy is very costly.
