Question
Hey everyone, I need some help with an Optimization problem for my calculus class. If you could please show all work and explanation for each step, that would be fantastic.
"Its 9:46 pm. Your snowmobile is out of gasoline and you are 3 miles due south of a major highway. The nearest service station is on the highway 6 miles east; it closes exactly at midnight. You can walk 4 miles per hour on roads, but only 3 miles per hour through snowy fields. Can you make it to the service station before it closes? You better consider that it wil take you at least 4 minutes to do this calculus problem. What route is best?"
I've attached my diagram for the problem. To my understanding, you will be taking the highway no matter what, it's just a matter of how much of the highway you take.
We know: its 9:50 by the time you start travelingExplanation / Answer
go 5 mile at angle of 53 degree + 2 mile on road
total time = 5/3+2/4 = 2.17 hr =2hr 10mnt
yes he can reach 4 mnt before tine
