QUESTION SET #2 PAGE 2. See sections 1-8 and 1-10 in Chapter 1. Answer these questions Alternately, there is also information in your Section 2 class notes material. Answer the following questions about the synodic month and the sidereal month: 13. Which of the two periods refers to the true amount of time that it takes the Moon to orbit once around the Earth as noticeable against a background of stars? (2 points) 14. And which of the two periods refers to the time it takes for the Moon to go through one complete cycle of its phases, like from one Full Moon phase to the next Full Moon, or one New Moon phase to the next New Moon? (2 points) 15. Which takes longer to finish, one synodic period or one sidereal period? (3 points) See section 2-7 in Chapter 2 on Sir Isaae Newton. Answer these questions: (3 points each) 16. Newion's First Law is about Inertia. If an object is traveling through space and is NOT being acted upon by a net external force, then what will happen to its motion? Will gradually slow down? Will it gradually speed up. Will it stay the same speed but change direction? Will it stay the same speed and continue in the same direction? 17. In section 2-7, it is said that Newton's second law can be succinctly stated as an equation. If a steady force constantly acts on an object, then what will the object do? Possible answers: Will it continue to move at the same speed? Will it accelerate proportional to and depending on its current speed? Will it accelerate proportional to its mass? Will it accelerate inversely proportional to its mass? 18. Consider Newton's Third Law, When one object exerts a force on a second object, what will happen? Possible answers: Will the second object will feel a force but the first object will not? Will each object experience a force coming from the other object? Will both objects feel a force in the same direction?Explanation / Answer
13. Sidereal month. The time required to make the 360 degree rotation to earth is sidereal month. So the true amount of time is given by sidereal month.
14. Synodic Month. The earth is moving around its orbit, causing the moon to take slightly more than 360 degree rotation for next new moon and that is represented as Synodic Month.
15. Synodic Month. Since the moon makes more than 360 degree rotation in Synodic Month, its larger than Sidereal month.
