Path: p Words 0 QUESTION 4 10 points are your suggestons to minimize the adverse effects of shale gas production For the toolbar press ALT+F10 (PC) or ALT FN+F10 (Mac) to coal and oil but hold the industry accountable l think we should promote gas as a cleaner for tighter standards CEO's like Audrey McClendon says he would go along with it because he says natural gas is such a huge game-changer. If you use natural gas in America American can e from OPEC it can put Americans back to work and most importantly we can lower our Carbon emissions and we can begin to improve the economy as well by not exporting a billion dollars everyday to foreign countries Path p QUESTION 5 What kind of new problems might arise if your suggestions were implemented?

Explanation / Answer

We often hear statements suggesting that by ramping up shale gas production, the U.S. can raise total natural gas production and solve many of its energy problems but studies have shown that the planet warming gas, methane, the chief component of natural gas, is escaping into the atmosphere in far larger quantities than previously thought. Natural gas is mainly composed of methane and a small percentage of other hydrocarbons (eg ethane). This simple composition makes natural gas a valuable energy resource and a great asset to the global economy. Along with its several advantages , there are few disadvantages as well. Methane leaks is a concern because while methane dissipates in the atmosphere more quickly than carbon dioxide, it is far more efficient in trapping heat. Methane is 21times more dangerous than carbon dioxide and more hazardous. Natural gas is flammable and toxic. Natural gas leaks maybe the cause of fire or explosions. The gas itself is toxic when inhaled. The main risk comes from the fact that it is naturally odorless and cannot be detected by smell, unless an odorent has been added to the gas mixture, so its difficult to detect its leakage. Also natural gas is a finite or non renewable energy resource and cannot be considered as a long term solution to our energy supply problem. When natural gas is used as a fuel in cars, the mileage is lower than gasoline. A drawback in producing hydrogen from natural gas is that the efficiency drops to almost 50% compared to the original chemical energy. Last but not the least, in order to use natural gas as a fuel, all its constituents other than methane has to be extracted . The processing results in several byproducts such as sulfur, carbon dioxide, helium etc which adds to the harmful constituents of the atmosphere.
