Question

Please use the directions Please solve by: 1) set up and solve a system of equations to answer the question asked. 2) Please show what you are doing to each equation i.e.…. #1 in one line of work and the resulting equation, #3, in another line. 3) When we use the method of elimination, we usually line up the two equations so that the addition or subtraction of the terms can be seen clearly.

Question: Amanda and Nicole are selling pies for a school fundraiser. Amanda sold 6 blueberry pies and 5 pumpkin pies for a total of $179. Nicole sold 12 blueberry pies and 11 pumpkin pies for a total of $377. Find the cost of each kind of pie.

Explanation / Answer

Let the cost of blueberry pie be 'b'

Let the cost of pumpkin pie be 'p'

From the given information,

6b + 5p = 179 => eq1

12b + 11p = 377 => eq2

multiply eq1 by 2 on both sides

2*(6b + 5p) = 2*179

12b + 10p = 358 => eq1

eq2 - eq1 => (12b + 11p) - (12b + 10p) = 377 - 358

p = 377 - 358

p = 19

12*b + 10*19 = 358

b = 168/12 = 14

cost of blueberry pie b = 14

cost of pumpkin pie p = 19
