Question
Please, help me to answer these questions
1. Nuclear fusion occurs only in the core of the sun. Why does it not also occur in the Corona which has a temperature of millions of degrees. You should explain another significant difference between the center of the sun and the Corona.
2. We explained the existence of sunspots as being due to the twisting of magnetic field lines that would “pop” through the surface. For this to be a good scientific hypothesis, it would have to be testable. What observations have we made that show that sunspots are a source of a strong magnetic field?
Explanation / Answer
ANSWER-
1)Nuclear fusion doesnot occur in the corona but in core because of anyone or a combination of the following factors that is present in corona then core contributing to their differences)-
-the density in the corona is too low.
-the corona has too many free electrons
-atoms in the corona are mostly ionized.
-the corona has many heavy atoms than the core.
2)The sunspots are known to be magnetic because we can directly observe the effect that the field has on the spectral lines that we observe through a phenomenon called the Zeeman effect.Astronomers basically look at the spectral lines that come from the sunspots and measure by how much these lines are split.Using the principles of how magnetic field can affect spectral lines ,they compute the strength of the field required to reproduce the splitting that they see. These computations indicates that the magnetic field in the sunspots is much stronger than that on the rest of the Sun's surface, and thus that sunspots are somehow related to the Sun's magnetic field.
