Question

Scenario 1: A surgeon routinely performs 4 surgeries. The chance that he performs surgery "A" is 30%. A random sample of 15 patients is selected. Let the variable X be defined as the number of patients that have surgery "A Grades roctoruu Scenario 2: Thirteen (13) cards are randomly selected from a standard deck of cards without replacement. Let the variable X be defined as the number of spades selected. Directions: Pick a scenario describe a binomial experiment. Recall the random variable X is for the number of successes in a binomial experiment. . Be certain to state the criteria for a binomial distribution and how it does or does not meet each of the four pieces. Once your answer is posted, you will be able to see your classmates' responses.

Explanation / Answer

Binomial distribution satisfies the following criterion

1. There must two outcomes " success" and " failure".

2. There are only finite number of trials.

3. The outcomes are independent

4. The probability of success p and probability of failure q is fixed.

In the scenerio 1, success is " performing surgery A" and failure is " not performing surgery A". There are only 4 trials. The trials are independent of each other and the probability of success p is 0.30. Therefore, scenario 1 follows binomial distribution.

In scenerio 2, the cards are drawn without replacement. Thus the outcomes will not be independent. This violates the criterion for binomial distribution.
