Situation:   You are interested in assessing if personality plays a role in being an effective manager. You decide to measure the personality variables of introversion/extraversion (1-10 scale with a higher number meaning more extraverted), group functioning (1-10 scale with a higher number indicating better team work skills) and type A personality (1-10 scale with a higher number meaning more type A characteristics). Look up Type A if you need to know more.   You have a reliable and valid managerial effectiveness scale (1-15 with a higher number indicating you would be an effective manager).

A.

We see that rating of introversion/extraversion increases with increased rating of managerial effectiveness. So, personality variables introversion/extraversion and managerial effectiveness are high positive correlated.

We see that rating of group functioning increases with increased rating of managerial effectiveness. So, personality variables group functioning and managerial effectiveness are high positive correlated.

We see that rating of Type A decreases first with increased rating of managerial effectiveness and then decreases. So, personality variables managerial effectiveness and Type A are have low correlation.

B.

Effective managers are highly extrovert and have effective group functioning. Effective managers may have low, medium or high Type A personality.

C.

As, managerial effectiveness is highly linearly correlated with introversion/extraversion and group functioning variables, it would be appropriate to do a multiple linear regression on this dataset. The predictor variable would be managerial effectiveness rating. The dependent variables would be  introversion/extraversion and group functioning variables.

D. We would expect a high coefficient of determination between 0.75 and 1 so, that the variables  introversion/extraversion and group functioning explain high percentage of variation of managerial effectiveness variable. We expect the model to be significant so that the predicted managerial effectiveness is within 95% confidence interval of true managerial effectiveness for any observation.
