Question

Points, lines, and polygons

a) can be considered the "attributes" of a GIS data set

b) are called vector primitives

c) can only be used to map discrete objects

d) can be stored in the same feature class in ArcGIS

e) both b) and c)

Define the terms metadata and data dictionary. Provide an example of the type of information stored in metadata, and explain what metadata are used for and how it can add value to a data set.

What does it mean when you see a red exclamation mark next to a map layer in the table of contents in ArcMap? What might cause this to happen? Provide one reason why ArcMap is set up this way.

Explanation / Answer

1) Attributes data is represented in tabular format, whereas lines, points and polygons are used in Vector data which includes imagery. Polygons are used to represent areas, such as boundaries of cities and all, whereas lines are used to represent linear features likes rivers, street and all. And points are used to represent different data points such as schools, hospital, etc. So it's clear that they are Vector primitives as well as all are used to map different objects. So both option 'B' and ' C' are correct.

2)Metadata- Metadata are the data that provides information about the other data. They summarise basic information about the long data, making easier to work on data.

Data Dictionary- A set of file that contains database's metadata. It records information about data ownership, relationship of data to other objects and all. More thoroughly, data dictionary can be only interacted by data administrator.

Metadata are much useful, for example a data might collect information that might include books, authors, etc and more vastly if we search for a question or any thing on Google , we just enter the short key related to our search and Google shows us every related information about it. This means that we have entered the just the metadata( assume) and the Google provide us every data related to it. In the same way if we search for products on online shopping sites, the data administrator tracks our habits and taste of choice and stores data about our choice and all. Armed with all these information they shows you the product of your need. Thus this metadata helps us in our ease to access.

(Hope you got your answer regarding Metadata)

3)When we see a red exclamation mark next to a map layer in table of contents means to have broken data link. This might have happened due to the missing source data, or being unable to locate data, or may be data has been replaced or altered. ArcMap is set up this way to avoid the intermixing of data, if two data have same name, it can lead to intermixing, thus to avoid this you can rename or replace the data to get rid of red exclamation.
