A box plot can tell whether a data is symmetric or not and it can also tell whether the data is right-skewed or left-skewed. However, it would not be able to detect the shape of symmetry in a similar fashion a histogram would be able to detect.

b)

Box-plots would only be useful when one needs to clearly check what those five number summary is and also to a certain extent it would talk about the distribution but when it comes to shape of symmetry, it wont be able to distinguish between two distributions.
