Global warming is a serious consequence as a result of climate change. It is caused by the following
-deforestation
-burning of fossil fuels
-use of aerosols and release of chlorofluorohydrocarbons into the atmosphere
The above activities result in the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide all which are all responsible for trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere. The use of aerosols also causes damage to the ozone layer which acts as an envelope by protecting the earth from the harmful ultra-violet radiations of the sun. As these gases increase or are released in excess more and more heat is trapped and retained resulting in the overall increase of the Earth's average temperature. Studies have shown an overall increase of nearly 0.7oC of the average temperature of the earth's surface during recent decades. This subsequently results in the melting of polar ice caps and increase in the sea levels. Global warming is also responsible for more intense hurricanes with higher wind speeds and increased precipitation which are more powerful and damaging. These finding were recently experienced with the strike of Hurricane Harvey.
