Question
An old explorer named Silas Seeker found a remote island where all the natives of the island either always told the truth (truth tellers) or always lied (liars). Each year the leaders of the three clans participate in an atheletic competition to determine which of the thre should govern the island for the new year. After this years competition, the following statements were made by the competitiors:
Ange: I came in second; Benge came in last
Benge: ange came in last; Conge won.
Conge: I came last; ange won.
What is the order of finish int he competition?
Explanation / Answer
If Conge came in first, then both Ange and Benge must have said some sort of truth, which cannot be possible because they disagree on who comes in second and last. Thus they both must be liars. Therefore, since Ange said he came in second and Benge said Ange came in last…both of these must be false. Therefore Ange came in first and won! Then since Ange said Benge came in last, and since he is lying, Benge must have come in second. I know this because we alreadly established Ange as coming in first. Therefore, Conge must have come in last (like he said) and therefore, he is a truth teller. Ange – 1st Benge – 2nd Conge – 3rd
