Question

Part I: Your Topic (Bangladesh)
Firstly, every student has been assigned a country to analyze. Please download the list of assigned
countries from the Student Portal to find out which country you have been assigned. You will receive a
zero (0) if you analyze the wrong country.
Part II: Background Research
Now you will need to begin collecting data and information about your country. To help support you, you
will be attending a mandatory Library Workshop on Friday May 25th, 12pm in Room 340. (*Please note:
if you do not attend this workshop, you will lose 1 mark (from a total of 50) on your grade for this
assignment). This workshop will help you learn about the Library’s resources, and who you can learn
more about the country you are analyzing.
Part III: Data Collection
Using the International Population Database (United States Census Bureau, 2016), find the following data
for your country (under the “Demographic Indicators” dropdown tab) for 1997, 2017 and 2037 only:
• Midyear Population and Density
• Crude Birth Rate, Crude Death Rate, Growth Rate, Net Migration Rate (under Components of
Population Growth)
• Total Fertility Rate
• Life Expectancy (under Mortality Indicators by Sex)
• Population Pyramids
Part IV: Writing your Analysis:
Based on the information you have learned about your country, and the demographic indicators collected
in Part III, answer the following questions as the body paragraphs of your paper:
A. For the year 2017, does the population of your country appear to be declining, expanding, irratic, or
steady? How do you know this? Please explain using evidence from your Demographic Indicators.
B. For 1997, 2017, and 2037, describe any differences noted between age groups (or cohorts) & sexes
observed in your population pyramids.
C. What is projected to happen to the population structure of your country in the future based on the
population pyramids? How do you know this? Please focus on the following age groupings: 0-14 years;
15-64 years; 65 years and over. Essentially, this question is asking if most of your population are
currently young people (kids), middle-aged people (productive-years), or older people and how these
groups change from 2017 to 2037. Lastly, you must illustrate whether or not there is or will be high
dependency at any given point in time.
D. Using the “Demographic Transition Model”, which stage is your country in, in 2017? How do you know
this? Please add supporting evidence from your population pyramids and Demographic Indicators,
E. Analyze the population pyramids and Demographic Indicators and describe the key factors that have
impacted the shape of the population pyramids. Identify any social, economic, political, and/or
environmental issues in your country that might be driving the population trends you have observed in
Questions A-D. This question will require outside research about your country. This is where the
Library Workshop will be helpful in providing you with support on finding sources.
F. Finally, end your analysis with an assessment of the following: Over the next 15-20 years, the biggest
demographic challenge in this country will be ________ because ________.   Please note that I am
specifically looking for a demographic (not economic) challenge. Make sure to add a few sentences
supporting your viewpoint regarding your country's future .

Explanation / Answer

A. For the year 2017, the population of Bangladesh was expanding or increasing. In 2017, the number of birth exceeded the number of deaths by 2,433,922 .The estimated population of Bangladesh in 2017 is 163,900,501 with the growth rate of 1.20%.

Key figures for Bangladesh population in 2017-

* 3,335,375 live births

*901,453 deaths

* natural increase - 2,433,922 people

*83,754,779 males as of 31 December 2017

* 82,112,528 females as of 31 December 2017.

B. For 1997, population aged 0-14 was 38.3% while population aged 15-64 was 55.9%, population aged 65+ 3.8% while the population of age groups 0-14 is 27.46%, 15-64 is 66.02% and 65 and over is 6.23% while under 15 for 2017 1.03/female, 15-64 is 0.91 male /female and 65 and over 0.97male per female. In this young people from age 15-64 is expanding.

C. For 2017, 0-14 years is 27.76%, 15-64years is 66.02% while 65 and over is 6.23% current population includes the productive years that is middle aged people from 15-64 years with 66.02%. Bangladesh now has joined the ranks of a lower middle income country, but the phase of growth and poverty reduction is harder so there is a doubt whether or not they will join high dependency at a given point of time.

D population trends in Bangladesh shows that Bangladesh is into third phase of demographic transition, having shifted from a Hugh mortality rate fertility to a low mortality - low fertility rate.
