Comment on what you learned about the Hubble Law, Hubble time and Hubble constant as it relates to the Big Bang theory. What is the present day value of the Hubble constant and what technique do Astronomers use to determine its value? What led Edwin Hubble to his discovery that the universe is expanding? What is the meaning of the term Homogeneous and Isotropic universe? Can there be said to be a center of the universe or an edge of the universe? What were some of the other competing theories on the beginning of the universe during the time of Hubble's discovery? Which theory did Einstein or other great scientists of the time subscribe to, how about Newton? What are the present day competing theories to the Big Bang that offer a suitable explanation for the beginning of the universe? Are there any other questions you have? Did you understand everything in the beginning portion of lecture 13? What did you learn that you did not know before and how did this lecture inspire and move you?
Explanation / Answer
V = H0D, where V= the observed velocity of the galaxy away from us (km/sec), H0= Hubble's "constant" (km/sec/Mpc), D= the distance to the galaxy (Mpc).
