Chapter 7: Provide a detailed response to the “Doing Environmental Science”.

Using Google Earth, find an undeveloped ecosystem somewhere on the planet that you can zoom in on to observe some features. For example, find a mountain system or a river system that is undeveloped. Write a description of what you see.

Then find such an example of a biome that has been developed and write a detailed comparison of your undeveloped and developed biome samples.

If possible, check in on these systems once during your course term and again at the end of the term and describe any changes to the systems that you can observe. Suggest a hypothesis to explain major changes.

Explanation / Answer

The Mulchatna River is a, 160 mole tributary of the Nushagak river in the US state of Alaska. Beginning at Turquoise aside from scattered cabins the Mulchatna River is undeveloped. The Mulchatna river is a famous wild and scenic river especially for the quality if fishing for all types of salmon, trout and grayling. However there is proposal to build a large copper gold mine the pebble mine in the watershed of one of the Mulchatna tributaries.

Evergreen tropical rain forest this biome occurs under the tropical climate with high rainfall no seasonal drought, distant varieties of plants and animal species are found in this developed biome.

Undeveloped biome lacks the distant varieties of plants and animals while the developed biome has a large variety of plants and animal species, since the rate of precipitation is very high in developed biome it never face famines like droughts while in undeveloped biome the rate of precipitation is low. The level of humidity and density of the vegetation gives the developed biome a unique water and nutrient cycle which lacks in undeveloped biome.

Published hypothesis are almost invariably too incomplete and too poorly specified and too dependent upon unrealistic assumptions. So it is very difficult to suggest a specified and clear hypothesis for the major changes to the systems.
