Question

In a certain type of automobile engine, the cylinder head is fastened to the block by 10 bolts, each of which should be torqued to 60 Nm. Assume that the torques or the bolts are independent.
a.) If each bolt is torqued correctly with probability 0.99, what is the probability that all the bolts on a cylinder head are torqued correctly?
b.) the goal is for 95% of the engines to have all their bolts torqued correctly. What must be the probability that a bolt is torqued correctly in order to reach this goal?

wouldnt a.) be 0.90 probability, and b.) I have no clue

Explanation / Answer

a)probality all all the bolts on a cylinder head are torqued correctly=.99^10=.90438

or ans is .99, that each bolt is correctly . So first one has probability, second one .99, etc.

Ans = .99(.99).99(.99)....=.99^10

b)if as in first one the probabilities for each bolt are the same and independent, Then probability of one is x.

.95=x^10 or x=.99^.1=.99488
