Question
Dink ft0 Coca-Cola in Egypt. An Egyptian gir drinks from a bottle of Coca-Cola in a shop in downtown Cairo, Egypt. After an Intemet rumor that the Coca-Cola logo, if looked at or in a mirror, reads "No Mohammed, No Mecca" in Arabic, a top religious authority in Egypt studied the label and finally declared that "there is no defamation to the religion of Islam from near or far." Considering the Image 1. Why would Coca-Cola be a target for such a rumor? Can you think of othe examples in which consumer goods were boycotted as the symbols of a larger culture, value system, or belief? What, to your eye, is particularly revealing or compelling about this image? 2. what tdoes the photographer want you to see? Does this image support or contradict images that you see in the media about women in the MiddleExplanation / Answer
1) This incident with the coca cola company was worth learning because the rumor and myth can spread at a very high speed and need to be crushed at very begining. The company in this incident may be targeted by the people who think to weaken the companies which develop money for other countries, it may be targeted to lose its market value at a very fast rate so that other rival companies can come up and take up the market share. It can have either or both reasons. Some people also thought at that time that coca cola was supporting isreal so there can also be a factor that this incident was to crush both in one go by some anti social elements. Reason can be any or all.
The boycott of Arla Foods which started in about 2006 was also because of the large cultural protest, which got into fire after a cartoon of Prophet Mohammad wearing a bomb shaped hat. This incident costed arla foods to lose 60% market share at that time however the company regained it market afterwards.
2) The most compelling parts of this image is the coca cola poster and the girl drinking the boycotted drink coolly as she doesn't care or she do know the truth of rumor. And hence the photographer took this image to show that the people use the products for there needs and many do not care for the sentiments or rumors attached with it. This image of a girl really contradicts the image of women shown by the media that middle east women are pan islamic in beliefs, because in this image the girl is drinking the drink attached with the rumor of defaming her religion
