Question

3. Correlating chemical and conductivity behavior: Compare the rates of reaction of CacO,(s) with 6 M acetic acid and 6 M hydrochloric acid. The reaction of CaCO3 with an acid, HA, is a. 2HA(aq)+ CaCO,(s) Ca (aq) + 2A (aq)+ CO,(8)+ H,o0) b. Compare the rates of reaction of Zn(s) with 6 M HC,H O2 and 6 M HCl. The reaction of zinc with an acid, HA, is 2HA(aq) + Zn(s) ? Zn2+ (aq) + 2A-(aq) + H2(g) Is there a correlation between the rates of the chemical reactions of 6 M HC,H,O2 and 6 M HCI and the conductivities observed for HC2H,O2(aq) and HCl(aq) in Part I? Suggest an explanation c.

Explanation / Answer

1(a) rate of reaction will be faster in case of CaCO3 as the ion A- formed will be more stable due to distribution of negative charge on oxygen atoms.

(b) Here also the C2H4O2 will have high rate of reaction due to stability of A- ion formed.

C. Conductivity indicates the presence of free ion means the presence of stable anion. So, the more conductivity will have more rate of reaction.
