Question

A recent local musical sold adult and child-priced tickets for admission. They sold a total of 68 tickets for the Saturday matinee. The adult wickets were $18.50 and the child tickets were $7.50. If the number of adult tickets they sold is represented by the variable a, write an expression for the number of child's tickets. The total amount of money collects for all the ticket was $708.00. Write and solve an equation that can be solved to find the number of child tickets and the number of adult tickets that were sold.

Explanation / Answer

a) Let the number of tickets sold for children be x

then according to the equation

a + x = 68

x = 68 - a, where a represents the number of child tickets

b)

Amount collected = 708 = a * 18.50 + x * 7.50

708 = 18.50a + 7.50(68-a)

708 = 11a + 510

198 = 11a

a = 18

Hence the number of adult tickets = 18 and number of childrent tickets = 50
