Case #1

As a qualified Medical Technician working in a western hospital testing lab, you are given a urinary sample to analyze. The patient is exhibiting signs of a sever bladder infection with high fever. After you complete a series of quick tests, you find that there is a significant number of bacteria present and start to identify the culture(s). You find one main morphology (Gram negative) and the organism showed the following results in diagnostic tests:

Gram (-), bacillus shaped

Motile

No Citrate as a carbon source

Non-lactose fermenter

Urease positive

H2S positive

Associated with catheter obstruction

Explanation / Answer

The results of diagnostic test belongs to Proteous mirabilis, this microorganism belongs to family Enterobacteriaceae. Proteus mirabilis can be identified as a gram negative, rod shaped, motile, Urease negative and produce hydrogen sulphide.

The Enterobacteraceae family have only order Entrobacteriales, representative order of the class Gammaprotobacteria in the Phyllum Protobacteria. Many members of this family are normal part of gut flora of human and other animals, while others are found in soil, water and as pathogen.
