Question

Initially Jason is in Paris and Marie is in Rome. The road from Rome to Paris is 1000 km long. They both start driving at the same time. Jason drives at speed J for two hours then speeds up to speed 2J. Marie drives at constant speed M. They meet after 3 hours. After 2 hours of driving they are 410 km apart. Write two equations that express these facts. What was Marie’s speed?

P.S.( I just need clarification on the second equation for which i got 2m +2J= 410. But apparantly that's not right. Can you clarify your thought process if you get something different? The first equation is 4j +3m =1000

Explanation / Answer

distance between rome to paris = 1000 km

jason drives at J for 2 hours

distance covered by jason in 3 hours = 2j + 2j = 4j

distance coverred by marie in 3 hours = 3m

4j + 3m = 1000

2j + 2m + 410 = 1000

2j + 2m = 590 -------------- eqn 2

solving the 2 equations for j and m

multiplying eqn 2 by -2

-4j - 4m = -1180

4j + 3m = 1000

----------------------------

m = 180

therefore , Maries speed = 180 km/ hour
