Question 54 1.66 pts n might individuals engage in apparently altruistic acts? Select the two that apply D If they are highly related to each other. If they are unselfish individuals If the altruism is likely to be reciprocated. a If the act benefits their species or population Unrelated individuals never perform apparently altruistic acts. Question 55 1.66 pts Mantled howler monkeys have been found to obtain most of their food from relatively rare trees, even though finding these trees takes much longer than finding common trees. Nutritional analyses of both rare and common trees found that the rare trees tended to be higher in protein and water, while the common trees tended to be higher in crude fiber and plant secondary compounds (indigestible compounds). This is an example of O Adaptive foraging strategy, shaped by Natural Selection in many species O High cognitive abilities unique to primates, humans and a few other species

Explanation / Answer

Question 54 when might individuals engage in apparently altruistic acts.

1. Is there are unselfish individuals

2. If the act benefits their species or population.

Animals live together in a group have potential to help each other. Altruistic behaviour is common. But by behaving altruistically and organism reduces the number of offspring it is likely to produce but boosts the number that other organisms in the group can produce. It occurs in animals or groups where natural selection occurs at group level and not at individual level. Here an unselfish individual performs acts which puts its own life to risk but increases the over all fornesf of the group. These acts increase the benefits for all the other individual in the group and hence helps group selection.

Question 55

Intraspecific competition as the dominant individuals can monopolize resources.

Since the food they eat is rare, there will be selection for males that can readily avail this rare food. There will be competition over limited food resources. They will spend most of their energy to find food. Foraging will determine their social hierarchy through Complex interactions with in the group.

Question 56

Answer is - polygyny (males mate with multiple females)

Here there is selection and competition between females with better ornamentation. Increased ornamentation relates to Greater chance of meeting with the male.

Question 57

Answer is - human actions.

Lately human actions are disturbing the normal well being of the ecosystem. Indiscriminate cutting down of trees increase in number of industries as well as increasing pollution leads to primary c cause for mass extinction of many species. Such species are losing their habitat are there ecosystem is ruined by human activities.
