Thank youD Question 59 1.67 pts Ninety-percent of all the species that ever existed have gone extinct. With most of the decline having occurred in the last 400 years. This shows that: Current extinction rates are very similar that what has been observed in the past Current extinction rates are very high compared to the past O The world has too many species, more than it can support O None of these choices is correct
Explanation / Answer
1. Nobody can say with certainty how many species there are on Earth. No doubt, millions of species are there but their numbers are falling fast. One of the first great rules of terrestrial biology is that no species is forever. The Earth has gone through five major extinction events before—from the Ordovician-Silurian, about 350 million years ago, to the Cretaceous-Paleogene, 65 million years back and the likely causes included volcanism, gamma ray bursts, and, in the case of the Cretaceous-Paleogene wipeout, an asteroid strike—the one that killed the dinosaurs. But the result of all of the extinctions was the same: death, a lot of it, for 70% to 90% of all species, depending on the event. Therefore, we can say that the current extinction rates are very similar that what has been observed in the past.
2. Ecological footprint is a measure of the human demand on the earths ecosystems. Smaller Ecological Footprint means lower human demand. Ecological footprint is measured by dividing our food consumption by the mean food production per hectare of local arable land. The vegetarian meal has 37%-56% lower total energy budget relative to meat-based meals. Ecological footprint can be decreased by a vegetarian diet. t's easier to grow food in case of lower ecological footprint and vegetarian need to ingest less chemical energy than omnivores. Therefore, these all conditions favouring the vegetarian diet in low ecological footprint.
